Memorable performances in the World Cup Cricket

Since the first world cup events in 1975 till 2007, there were many memorable performances which were responsible for putting the team to the winning position from nowhere. These performances were responsible for awarding the players Man of the Match award or making them player of the tournament.

1975

In this first ever world cup a magnificent century by the West Indies captain Clive Lloyd of 102 runs ensured them to be the champion.

1979

In this second edition a century by the best ever ODI batsman Sir Vivian Richard popularly known as Viv ensured West Indies their consecutive Championship Trophy.

1983

In this world cup Kapil Dev came into bat when India were in dire position losing 5 wickets for less than 30 runs against the very new team Zimbabwe. Kapil played till then the best knock in ODI history of 175 not out. Till then it was the highest individual score.

1987

In this fourth edition of World Cup the world saw the first sportsman spirit shown by the West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh who asked the Pakistani batsman Salim Jaffer to return to the crease instead ok making him out. This caused them the match but West Indies did not regret.
Sir Vivian Richard scored breathtaking 181 runs against Sri Lanka.
Australian Fast bowler became national hero when took 5 wickets against the most favorite team then Pakistan thereby making big upset in the first semi final.
England batsman Graham Gooch used the reverse sweeps against the Indian spinners to score a century against another favorite India to make another big upset reaching final.
This world cup show the rise of Indian opening batsman Navjot Sidhu who popularize the stepping out shot against the spinners.


1992
This world Cup showed the use f so called modern days power play. Mark Greatbatch of New Zealand showed the world the ways to score at a very fast rate in the opening few overs and the introduction of the spinners within 5th over of the innings by New Zealand.
The spectacular and the importance of fielding was seen for the first time from south African player Jonty Rhodes who became more popular for his fielding than his batting ability. The world saw the rise of a star Inzamam Ul Haq who played one of the best knock in the history of world Cup against New Zealand in the semi final. The Final witnessed one of the best magic bowling spell by the best ever left hand bowler Wasim Akram.

1996
The world saw the rise of Arvind De Silva and Sanath Jayasurya. Brian Lara scored a magnificent century against South Africa. De Silva played memorable knocks against Kenya, India in the semi final and against Australia in the final.

1999
This world Cup saw the rise of Lance Klusner who punished all the bowlers with flat and power hitting. Steve Waugh showed rock solid mental strength to pull out Australia from the verge of defeat against South Africa by hitting his maiden ODI century.

2003

In this world cup Sachin Tendulkar played one of his career best knock to defeat Pakistan. His shot against Shoaib Akthar is still fresh in the mind of the people. Ricky Ponting played a captains knock in the final.

2007

This edition of World Cup saw the early exit of the two major teams India and Pakistan by the weak opposition Bangladesh and Ireland respectively. The final saw the explosive batting by the Australian batsman Adam Gilchrist who ensured them the Cup for three times in a row. This was the second edition where Australia became champion without losing any match.
